SOLD ON DESIGNATION - BERTHEUIL CASTLE FACE ARCH (19th CENTU - Lot 154
SOLD ON DESIGNATION - BERTHEUIL CASTLE FACE ARCH (19th CENTURY)
Monumental ashlar limestone pediment-lucarne, now forming a garden arch or "factory". Second Empire period, Neo-Renaissance style.
Total dimensions of pediment: H. 560 cm x W. 500 cm.
Dimensions of opening (passage): H. 267 cm x W. 140 cm.
Provenance: Château de Bertheuil (also known as Château Lacaze) in Saint-Perdon (Landes). The château was built during the Second Empire by Landes industrialist Monsieur Lacaze. A testament to the architecture that represented the industrial bourgeoisie of the 19th century, the residence was conceived in palatial proportions with the ambition of welcoming Emperor Napoleon III, whose visit to the Landes region was hoped for before the fall of the regime in 1870. Ravaged by fire and then abandoned, the château was razed to the ground in 2011. This architectural element, visible in old iconography, was the dormer window crowning the central main building. It remains the only monumental vestige of this vanished heritage.
Condition: external wear and erosion, visible cracks and spot repairs; reassembled in situ.
Special collection conditions : The lot is to be collected on site in Landes (40). Bidders' attention is drawn to the fact that dismantling, lifting and transport are entirely at the purchaser's expense and responsibility. The intervention of stone and lifting professionals is imperative.
