Louis V period
Mid-18th century

Suite of three unique and rare pieces.
1) dimensions approx. 305 cm high x 297 cm wide
In wool and silk
JB Oudry edited circa 1736 and 1740 .
Wear and tear ?
Drawn 'and inspired' from the fables of Europe (620-564 BC approx.) and La Fontaine ( 8/07/1621- 13/04/1695 )
In this first panel
1) the grapes and the fox
2) the tortoise and the two ducks
3) the fish and the cormorant
The presence of two monkeys on the right is a mark of originality. For La Fontaine, the monkey is an ambivalent animal, an imitator of man, a degraded double. He has the advantage of wit over the animals he comes into contact with, and his malignity proves to be a superior skill on the path of play and detachment, and he can embody a form of wisdom and unexpected reversal. The monkey fascinates La Fontaine.

1) the Horse and the Wolf
