Handwritten numbering, probably from the early 19th century, lower right, on the margin of the mount: "9".
Provenance:
- Dominique-Vivant Denon (1747-1825), Director General of the Imperial Museums, engraver and writer, Paris
- perhaps no. 743 or 749 or 833 of his after-death sale, Paris, May 1-19, 1826,
- Émile Calando "père" (1840-1898), an "amateur dealer" in Paris, who considered it a drawing by Claude Gellée,
- Émile Calando "fils" (?-1953), who considered it a drawing by Claude Gellée,
- sold by the latter, in 1950, to René-Claude Catroux (1874-1964), an expert in Paris, as a drawing by Claude Gellée, for 25,000 francs.
- Probably acquired from the latter by Count Charles de Gramont (1911-1976), Paris.
We would like to thank Mr. Denis Calando, author of a forthcoming review of his ancestors' collection, for kindly providing us with provenance information.
