Follower of CLAUDE GELLÉE known as Le Lorrain (1600 - 1682) Roman countryside with a tree and two figures Pen and brown ink, wash on paper 22.5 x 33 cm Collection mark lower left: Émile Calando "père" (L.837) Collector's mark lower right: Dominique-Vivant Denon (L.780) Handwritten numbering, probably from the early 19th century, lower right, on the margin of the mount: "9". Provenance: - Dominique-Vivant Denon (1747-1825), Director General of the Imperial Museums, engraver and writer, Paris - perhaps no. 743 or 749 or 833 of his after-death sale, Paris, May 1-19, 1826, - Émile Calando "père" (1840-1898), an "amateur dealer" in Paris, who considered it a drawing by Claude Gellée, - Émile Calando "fils" (?-1953), who considered it a drawing by Claude Gellée, - sold by the latter, in 1950, to René-Claude Catroux (1874-1964), an expert in Paris, as a drawing by Claude Gellée, for 25,000 francs. - Probably acquired from the latter by Count Charles de Gramont (1911-1976), Paris.
