Domenico Campagnola (Venice circa 1500-1564 Padua) - Lot 56
Domenico Campagnola (Venice circa 1500-1564 Padua) Country landscape with a river running through it, on the banks of which two walkers are resting in the shade of a tree Pen and brown ink on paper 272 x 405 mm. (Misses, folds, restorations). Typical of the artist's graphic work, this landscape is related to a large number of stylistically similar drawings. Shadows and variations in the steep terrain are treated with small, tight, regular hatching in pen and brown ink, similar to a wooded landscape in the Duke of Devonshire's collection at Chatsworth (M. Jaffé,The Devonshire Collection of Italian Drawings: Venetian and North Italian Schools, London, 1994, no. 264), two others at Christ Church, Oxford (J. Byam Shaw,Drawings by Old Masters at Christ Church Oxford, Oxford, 1976, I, no. 725-726, pl. 424,426) and one presented on the art market (Christie's New York sale, January 25, 2005, lot 34).
