TAPESTRY OF MUSES AND PIÉRIDES TAPESTRY OF MUSES AND PIÉRIDES Made by the workshops of Audenarde (Belgium) Ca.1580-1600 Dimensions: 341 x 457 cm Material : wool Number of warp threads: 5 per cm. Number of threads in weft: 10-12 per cm (see technical images p. 24-25). Iconography: Ovid's Metamorphoses (Book V). The Piérides defy the Muses and are transformed into nine magpies. The Piérides sing the hymn to the war of the Giants, while the Muses sing the myth of Proserpine (represented in the field of the tapestry). In the frieze, we find the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, a song that also appears in the Metamorphoses (Book X). Weaver's mark: Does not show a mark on the edge for its producer (see p. 9: year 1587 - Oudenaarde producers who do not mark their work).
