The Learned Elephant. Large questionnaire. (Saussine. Paris. - Lot 183
The Learned Elephant. Large questionnaire. (Saussine. Paris. Circa 1910). L'Éléphant savant. Grand questionnaire. (Saussine. Paris. Circa 1910). Wood-cardboard box, size 33.5 x 33.5 x 5.5 cm. Color lithograph on lid: on a circus ring, a clown in front of a small blackboard questions an elephant at his side. An educational game to test players' knowledge. Inside the box is a large cardboard disc that can be rotated on a central axis. Question-and-answer sheets can be placed on this disc, which is then covered with cardboard decorated with a large chromolithograph (same illustration as on the lid) and fitted with two slots: one where the clown's right hand is (where the questions will appear), the other under the elephant's mouth. Turning the disc reveals a question on the clown's side and its answer on the elephant's. The game comes with ten different questionnaires, each with 64 questions and answers. The questionnaires bear the initials FP, those of François Pfeiffer, who invented the Universal Questionnaire game in 1899. Rules on a (4) pp. in-8 booklet. The box has been reassembled, the lithograph on the lid is rubbed.
