What little is known about Marie Gayon is inversely proportional to the critical acclaim she received in the 1920s and 30s for her expressionist still lifes and landscapes in and around her native Annecy. During this period, Gayon exhibited regularly both in Paris (Galerie Solution, Galerie Ecalle) and in the French provinces.
The present work, exhibited at the Salon des Tuileries in 1935, but also probably at the Salon du Sud-Est in Lyon, caught the eye of critic Oscar David: "A Savoy landscape, in particular, is a magnificent green symphony, where all the greens, in the most varied shades, form an ensemble of captivating poetry".
