Jacopo di Antonio NEGRETTI known as Palma the Younger. 1548( - Lot 62
Jacopo di Antonio NEGRETTI known as Palma the Younger. 1548(?), 1550(?)-1628. Attributed to,
Samson and Delilah
circa 1611
Ink, pen, wash, 16.6 x 19.2 cm
Our drawing bears witness to Palma's working method, as he produced numerous preparatory works with their own artistic quality. It is probably the drawing for the engraving Samson et Dalila published in 1611. It bears witness to Palma's interest in biblical female protagonists such as Betsabe at the Bath, the Daughters of Lot, and Susanna and the Elders, for whom he dedicated a cycle. Here, it's the figure of Delilah that he chooses to treat. He depicts the fateful moment when she cuts off Samson's hair, thus depriving him of his power. This work reveals the artist's interest in this religious episode, which he treated in numerous works.
