An undisputed literary landmark at the time of his death on May 22, 1885, Victor Hugo was one of the few personalities to be buried in the Panthéon immediately after his death. His funeral was the subject of a national tribute, with a procession from the Champs-Elysées to the Panthéon. Léon Glaize, a pupil of Gérôme, was one of the few artists able to travel to Victor Hugo's bedside (along with Nadar and Léon Bonnat) to paint the master's final portrait.
