Vierge à l'enfant, de face
Atelier de moulage du Musée de sculpture comparée (1882-1928), after Germain PILON (1540-1590)
Virgin and Child, front view
Plaster, model on base
H. 108 cm W. 46 cm D. 27 cm
This original statue was commissioned from Germain Pilon by Pierre Vincent, prior of the Gréez monastery. It was intended for the high altar of the church of Notre-Dame-la-Couture (Le Mans), dismantled by the monks in 1732. Two other statues, in the effigy of saints Peter and Paul, also by the sculptor, belonged to this installation. Transferred during the Revolution to the "museum" set up in the abbey buildings, the Virgin and Child returned to the Notre-Dame de la Couture church in 1807, after the Concordat. The eyes of the Virgin and Child are painted (text from the Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine for their cast of this work, dated circa 1932).
