Vierge ou sainte, de face - Lot 142
Vierge ou sainte, de face Moulding workshop of the Museum of Comparative Sculpture (1882-1928) Virgin or saint, front Plaster, model on base H. 46 cm W. 27 cm D. 20 cm Based on the original work in the Musée de Cluny, Musée National du Moyen Âge (Paris), dated circa 1260/1270 and carved in wood in Northern France. This part of the mold reveals all the influences of the great medieval cathedral and Sainte-Chapelle projects: from the melancholy apostle of the Sainte-Chapelle, evident in the facial features, to the veil reminiscent of sculptures from Amiens Cathedral, or the puffing of the dress around the waist, reminiscent of works from Rheims Cathedral. As for the identification of the figure represented: although the work entered the collections as a Virgin, it was later identified as Mary Magdalene, but the position of the arms and the lack of anything she might be holding still leave the mystery unanswered... Cluny inventory no.: Cl.15428 and Wasset Collection, 10038 Period of manufacture and use of models on background: 1900-1960 Outdoor display possible: no Condition: missing, damaged, marks Type of mold in relation to model: fragment face
