Édouard Frederic Wilhelm RICHTER. 1844-1913. - Lot 73
Édouard Frederic Wilhelm RICHTER. 1844-1913. Pair of still lifes Oil on canvas Signed and dated E. Richter 1866 Dimensions with frame 74 x 95 cm ; 72.5 x 95 cm Orientalist Edouard Richter, Born to a Dutch mother, Edouard Frederic Wilhem Richter began his training as a painter at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. He later joined the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, studying under Ernest Hébert and Léon Bonnat. In 1866, he exhibited for the first time at the Salon, with still life as his subject. Our pair of paintings, dated 1866, correspond to this first submission by the artist. He subsequently exhibited regularly at the Salon, specializing in orientalism. His attachment to this movement can already be seen in these two still lifes. Firstly, through the repertoire of shapes chosen, particularly that of the ewer and the decorative motifs reminiscent of arabesques. But it is also perceptible in the warm tones of the paintings. These two works are a perfect reflection of his dual training. The choice of the still life can be traced back to his training in The Hague, since this was one of the favorite subjects of the Flemish schools. The Orientalist inspiration of the two canvases, on the other hand, most certainly stems from the influence of Parisian artistic life at the end of the 19th century.
