Large Celadon Dragon Carp in porcelain stoneware China or Japan 17th/19th century Celadon-glazed porcelain stoneware carp shown standing on its tail, with scales in relief, on an antique wooden base. Attached is a Guy Portier appraisal certificate dated July 25, 1991, mentioning the carp as Chinese and 17th century. The legend of the "Carp crossing the Dragon Gate" is an ancient Chinese legend linked to certain cliffs along the Yellow River, which are very close to each other, evoking the shape of a gate, and are known as the "Dragon Gate". At this point, the Yellow River is particularly difficult for fish to swim upstream, and legend has it that those who manage to do so are awarded the title of "Dragon". Thus, the carp becoming "Dragon" symbolized the man who managed to climb the social ladder by himself, and obtain a high position. The Dragon Carp thus became a symbol of success in studies, personal and professional life. Similar models were executed in jade (Christie's, Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, March 22, 2013, lot 1393).
