Our sensual "Rest of Diana" is to be compared with a "Sleeping Venus and Pan" (oil on canvas, 99.0 x 124.5 cm, private collection, present location unknown: https://rkd.nl/images/1337) Lairesse's paintings are described as a "Sleeping Diana" on three occasions in early auction records: in London in 1784 (M.G. collection, Christie & Ansell, March 12-13, lot 33), in London in 1831 (Bulgin collection, Southgate, February 18, lot 63) (George Jones, August 10, lot 173).
