Mimi PARENT. The Prince. No date. - Lot 163
Mimi PARENT. The Prince. No date. Relief box with painted and sculpted parts, wood, plaster, oil, black wood frame, titled on back (89.5 x 70 x 19.5 cm). Beautiful reliquary box by Mimi Parent (1924-2005). "The race is not extinct of those who prefer to amaze rather than astound, fortunately, and it is among them, marked like Cornell with the star on the forehead of poetic invention and the logic of the absurd, that we can find a legitimate filiation to the prophet of shadow boxes: I am thinking essentially of Louis Pons and Mimi Parent in France" (Joseph Cornell, Galerie 1900- 2000, 1989, p. 16.) Born in Montreal, Mimi Parent was the wife of Jean Benoît. She was responsible for the Crypte du fétichisme in the EROS exhibition at Galerie Daniel Cordier, which foreshadowed the symbolist, baroque accumulations of her reliquary boxes.
