César MORO. Untitled. Paris, 1927. - Lot 160
César MORO. Untitled. Paris, 1927. Gouache on paper (30.8 x 23.7 cm), framed. Very fine gouache, signed and dated. On verso, pencil sketches of faces. Peruvian poet and painter César Moro (1903-1956) met Breton in 1925. He collaborated with Surrealism in the service of the Revolution. In exile in Mexico from 1938, he and Wolfgang Paalen organized the International Surrealist Exhibition in 1940. However, the artist was to distance himself from Breton, whose evolution he did not appreciate, nor the positions on love set out in Arcane 17. The John Paul Getty Foundation helped bring the artist out of oblivion in 2012 with the exhibition Farewell to Surrealism: The Dyn Circle in Mexico. Moro is presented as "a central figure in the circulation of avant-garde ideas and aesthetics from the 1920s through the 1950s". Two marginal cracks restored.
