[CURIOSA]. Andréa de NERCIAT. Monrose ou le Libertin par fat - Lot 11
[CURIOSA]. Andréa de NERCIAT. Monrose ou le Libertin par fatalité. Sans lieu, [Liège, Desser ?], 1792. 4 volumes in-12 of 180 pp. the last, for the errata, unencrypted, 5 plates; 214 pp., (1) f. of errata, 5 plates; 206 pp. the last, for the errata, unencrypted, 5 plates; 200 pp., IV pp. for the publisher's Apostille, (2) ff. for the table and errata, 5 plates, (2) ff. and XI pp. for the Extract: marbled fawn calf, ornate ribbed spine, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, decorated inner edges (modern binding).
First edition, published under cover.
It was probably printed in Liège by Desser and not in Paris by Cazin, as Gay suggested.
At the end of volume IV, there is a notebook of 8 leaves including the title bearing Monrose ou le libertin par fatalité. Continuation of Felicia ou mes fredaines. By the same author. 1792. The eleven pages of text announced at the head as Extract give a summary of the work with cross-references to the various chapters. This supplement in the form of a prospectus does not seem to be described anywhere: it is quoted by Guillaume Apollinaire in his introduction to Felicia (L'OEuvre du chevalier de Nerciat II, 1921).
The illustration includes 20 engravings outside the text, attributed to Queverdo: printed on sheets of very fine China paper, they appear to post-date the edition.
Beautifully bound in modern 18th-century style.
The collation is in accordance with Pia's note based on a copy seen at Coulet et Faure in 1978, without engravings (cf. Les Livres de l'Enfer, col. 948-949).
Ex-libris Marius Herail.
(Dutel, no. A-714: does not mention engravings).
