[CURIOSA]. Amélie de Saint-Far, or La Fatale Erreur. A Hambo - Lot 6
[CURIOSA]. Amélie de Saint-Far, or La Fatale Erreur. A Hambourg et à Paris, chez les marchands de nouveautés, no date [circa 1808].
2 volumes in-12 of (2) ff. 236 pp. ; (2) ff. 236 pp. blue long-grained morocco, finely-ornamented ribbed spine, gilt roulette framing the boards, decorated inner edges, gilt edges over marbling, salmon-colored moire endpapers (later binding).
An early edition of this licentious novel, banned in 1825.
In his 1882 reprint, Jules Gay mentions two early editions, both rare, one undated, with a Hamburg address, the second dated 1808, with the same address as here. Gay also attributes authorship of the novel to Mme Guyot, author of Julie ou j'ai sauvé ma rose, rather than to the Countess Choiseul-Meuse.
Copy with 12 original ink drawings: attributed in the Gérard Nordmann collection catalog to Jules Adolphe Chauvet (1828-c. 1905). "A marvelous 19th-century pasticheur, Chauvet worked extensively on commission. Gay called on him many times for his Brussels editions, both overt and clandestine" (Bibliothèque érotique Gérard Nordmann I, 2006, no. 82).
A fine copy in decorated morocco.
From the Gérard Nordmann library, with bookplate.
(Gay-Lemonnyer, Bibliographie des ouvrages relatifs à l'amour I, col. 91: "roman licencieux, cynique et peu commun". - Pia, Les Livres de l'enfer, pp. 33-35).
