Achim von ARNIM. Contes bizarres. Translation by Théophile G - Lot 1
Achim von ARNIM. Contes bizarres. Translation by Théophile Gautier fils. Preceded by an introduction by Théophile Gautier. Paris, Michel Lévy, 1856. In-12 of (2) ff, IV, 313 pp. and (1) f. of table : green half-chagrin, spine ribbed with gold fillets, speckled edges (period binding). First French edition. Copy of André Breton, with his bookplate drawn by Dalí. Breton's preface to the second edition of Contes bizarres (1933) was a milestone, as was the chapter devoted to Arnim in his Anthologie de l'humour noir (1940). Attached is an autograph letter signed by Jean Bréjoux and addressed to Breton, with envelope postmarked May 16, 1960. He sends him the typescript of a partial translation of Arnim's short story Les Seigneurs du majorat. (André Breton 42 rue Fontaine, 2003, no. 33.)
